Choosing Kindness and Community – Wendy’s Story

Wendy has always been the first to step up when someone needs help.

In her class, she’s the student who notices when a classmate is sitting alone or struggling, and she quietly rallies her friends to make sure no one is left out. She is kind, dependable, and always giving back.

But this year, Wendy’s own family faced a difficult season of their own.

At home, her younger brother, Taylor, needed special meals. Rising costs and unexpected financial strain made meeting that need harder with each passing week. For a family that has built its life around helping others, asking for help was a big emotional challenge.

“From a person that has always gave back and lives a life of helping others, it can be hard to ask for help,” Wendy’s mom shared.

Thanks to the generosity of community donors, the Halton Learning Foundation was able to step in through its Eliminating Barriers program. HLF provided Walmart gift cards, which gave the family immediate means to buy the specialized food Taylor needed.

The relief was immediate and heartfelt.

“I can’t say how much I appreciate the help,” Wendy’s mom said. “This money allowed me to purchase special foods for Taylor. Thank you so, so much.”

That support didn’t just fill a fridge; it filled a home with hope. It allowed Wendy to keep showing up at school with the same light and kindness she’s always shared with others, knowing her family was being cared for, too.

While Wendy helped a classmate feel supported at school, our community made sure her family felt supported at home.

That is the power of HLF Month. When we rally together, we make sure no student is limited by barriers. When one person like Wendy starts a small ripple of kindness, our community turns it into a wave.

By choosing kindness, we strengthen our community and make sure that same kindness reaches the students and families who need it most, stronger and bigger than before.

This HLF Month, join us in choosing kindness and community.
