A young girl sits outdoors, holding a paintbrush and palette, working on a painting of a yellow object on an easel, and looking back at the camera.

A Gift of Belonging

There’s something special about seeing a child light up when they talk about something they love.

For Tara, it’s art.

She’s the kind of student who notices the little details in paintings, gets excited about colours and creativity, and loves expressing herself through art whenever she can. So when her class announced a trip to an art gallery, Tara was thrilled.

Her classmates talked excitedly about what they might see, the exhibits they wanted to explore, and the day ahead.

Tara was excited, too.

But quietly, she also knew something else.

Her family couldn’t afford the extra cost of the trip.

For many students, moments like these can feel isolating. The excitement of a class experience slowly gives way to worry, disappointment, or fear of being left out. Sometimes students stay quiet about it. Sometimes they pretend they’re okay missing the experience altogether.

Thankfully, Tara’s teacher recognised the situation and reached out to Halton Learning Foundation for support.

Through HLF’s Eliminating Barriers Fund, Tara’s field trip expense was covered.

And because of that, she got to go.

She walked through the gallery alongside her classmates, explored exhibits that sparked her imagination, and experienced the joy of learning outside the classroom, free from the weight of financial stress holding her back.

When Tara came home, she couldn’t stop talking about it.

She shared every highlight with her family and neighbours—everything she saw, everything she felt, everything she experienced. Days later, she was still talking about her favourite moments from the gallery and the excitement of being there with her class.

Because for Tara, this wasn’t just a field trip. It was a moment of inclusion and belonging.

A reminder that she belonged there, too.
