“Thanks for Not Making It Weird” – Thomas’s Story

Mr. Kinsley had been teaching for years. He knew when something wasn’t right.

Thomas, a Grade 8 student, had always been engaged in class. He was quick to help classmates, eager to participate, and always had a joke ready to make people smile.

So when Thomas started pulling away, Mr. Kinsley noticed.

He didn’t press for answers.

Instead, he checked in. A nod in the hallway. A quick conversation after class. An extra few minutes during lunch on the days Thomas seemed to need it most.

Over time, Thomas started to open up.

His family had been going through a difficult time. Finances were tight, and worries at home were beginning to follow him into the classroom. Things many students take for granted had become sources of stress and uncertainty—groceries, clothing, and the cost of participating in school activities.

Thomas didn’t want anyone to know. Like many young people, he didn’t want to feel different from his peers.

Concerned about the challenges the family was facing, Mr. Kinsley connected them with the Halton Learning Foundation.

With support from HLF, the family received assistance that helped ease some of the financial pressure they were experiencing. Thomas was able to focus more on being a student again and participate in important end-of-year activities alongside his classmates.

But what stayed with Thomas wasn’t the support itself.

It was the fact that someone noticed.

Someone cared enough to ask how he was doing.

Someone saw beyond the missing assignments and the quiet moments.

On the last day of school, Thomas stopped by Mr. Kinsley’s classroom before heading home for the summer.

He lingered in the doorway for a moment.

Then he smiled and said, “Thanks for not making it weird.”

Mr. Kinsley still thinks about that.
