The Kindness that changed a School Year: Ashley’s Story
Ashley used to love school spirit days.
She loved picking colours with her friends, dressing up for themed days, and feeling part of the excitement everyone talked about leading up to school events.
But this year was different.
Behind the scenes, Ashley’s family was navigating financial challenges, and even small extra school expenses had started to feel overwhelming. Over time, Ashley stopped asking to participate in certain activities altogether. Instead, she quietly tried to blend in and avoid drawing attention to what she didn’t have.
Her teacher noticed the change.
She noticed Ashley becoming quieter during class activities and sitting back during moments that used to excite her. Wanting to ensure Ashley still felt included and supported, the teacher connected the family with the Halton Learning Foundation.
For Ashley’s family, that support meant more than just receiving help with school-related needs. It was the kindness behind it that stayed with them most.
“We are truly grateful for the Eliminating Barriers support from HLF,” Ashley’s parent shared. “It means so much to know that help like this exists and that there are teachers who genuinely care about the well-being of students and their families.”
With support from HLF, Ashley was able to participate more fully at school again — smiling alongside her classmates, joining activities, and feeling included in moments that every child deserves to experience.
For her family, it was a reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a child feel seen.
“The kindness, understanding, and willingness to go the extra mile to ensure that children feel supported and have what they need makes a very meaningful difference.”
And perhaps most importantly, it reminded them they weren’t alone.
“Support like this not only helps provide important resources, but it also gives families reassurance and encouragement during times when extra support is needed.”
