A New Start Made a Little Lighter – Obi’s Story

Obi moved to Canada with his family at the beginning of the school year, stepping into what felt like a completely new world and a new start.

Everything was different. The school system, the routines, the expectations, even the small things like how to get ready for class each morning. While his family was adjusting to life in a new country, they were also trying to make sure Obi had what he needed to settle into school and feel like he belonged.

But the transition came with challenges. Unexpected costs and pressures made it difficult for the family to keep up with some essentials for school. Back home, things were a lot more straightforward and familiar, but here it felt hard to keep up for both Obi and his parents.

Obi’s teacher noticed some of the challenges and referred the family to HLF.

That’s why the support that came through HLF was such a relief.

We are truly grateful for the Eliminating Barriers support from HLF. It means so much to know that programs like this exist and that there are people who genuinely care about the well-being of students and their families.

For Obi, the support meant he could walk into school feeling prepared, included, and less aware of the challenges of settling into a new country. It gave him a sense of normalcy during a time when everything else still felt unfamiliar.

For his family, it brought something just as important — relief.

The kindness, understanding, and willingness to go the extra mile to ensure that children feel supported and have what they need makes a very meaningful difference. Support like this gives families reassurance and encouragement during times when extra help is needed.

Starting over in a new country is never easy. But for Obi, having a community step in at the right moment made the transition a little gentler.

And for his family, it meant knowing they weren’t navigating it alone.
